Our Club’s International Service committee, in collaboration with the Airport Rotary Club and other Rotarians are continuing our support of the Rural Health Team (RHT) in the Tororo District of Uganda. The RHT consists of a team of health care providers (about equivalent to our Physician Assistants) who are now using maternal ultrasound as part of antenatal care, screening for cervical cancer and serving outlying communities with a mobile medical van all due to the support of our Clubs’ Rotary global grants awarded by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Following is RHT’s report to our Clubs highlighting their activities in 2023-2024:
Dear Team,
Rural Health Team is pleased to inform you that through your support, the Team continued to impact many lives in the rural communities of Uganda and wish to shout out our gratitude for your support through the FY 2023-2024. Thank you for being part of a community that is building a community-based service organization that is bringing hope to many less privileged rural residents.
In the FY 2023-2024, RHTU impacted many lives as indicated below:
- 1. Our community clinics provided health care to a total of 1552 patients;
- 2. The team provided a total of 134 cervical cancer services, out of which 22 were positive on VIA and 42 were diagnosed with other cervical conditions, were treated and educated;
- 3. The team supported the malnourished children of Ochegen with nutritional supplements, mosquito nets and beddings. All the 12 children who initially scored red, are now scoring green on MUAC tape;
- 4. The mobile medical van, a Rotary project implemented by the RHTU. The MMV houses a number of services as indicated below and has been in operation for only five months;
- a) Outpatient department, 799 patients received medical services through the MMV in the past five months;
- b) Antenatal care, 224 mothers received their Antenatal services at their door step through the services of the MMV;
- c) Ultrasound scanning, 319 patients received scanning services at their door step, 89% of which were pregnant mothers of which 21% were diagnosed with pregnancy complications. These complications were properly managed and the life of both the mother and child saved;
- d) 385 patients received other services including Mama kits, treated mosquito nets, intermittent treatment against malaria and Tetanus toxoid.
The MMV therefore provided care to 1727 patients in its first five months of operation.
With your support, the team therefore provided health care to a total of 3425 patients in the rural communities of Tororo, Uganda during the Financial Year 2023-2024.
We thank you and look forward to your continued support in building an impactful community-based health service organization.
Yours in service,
Wilbroad Okun.
Coordinator, Rural Health Team Uganda.
